Individuals with hearing impairments require effective interaction with their environment to ensure holistic development, especially during their formative years. However, teacher performance reveals gaps that hinder the development of skills in this population. This article presents the results of a diagnostic study on teacher professional development for the development of skills in students with hearing impairments. A qualitative study in four stages, using a phenomenological approach, was conducted in three provinces in the southern region of the Dominican Republic during 2024 and 2025. Semi-structured interviews were administered to 15 teachers from Special Education Classrooms and Schools for the Deaf, using purposive sampling. These interviews confirmed the existence of a gap between the demands of inclusive education and teacher training regarding life skills for students with hearing impairments.
