Social view to colonoscopy as a tool of diagnosis and follow-up
Keywords:
colonoscopy; colon diseases; diagnosis; outcome assessmentAbstract
Introduction: Colorectal diseases are common worldwide, and colonoscopy is their primary diagnostic tool. Therefore, understanding patients' social perceptions of this procedure is as crucial as its technical accuracy in reducing inequalities and improving health outcomes. The objective of this text is to assess the impact of colonoscopy on the detection and follow-up of colorectal lesions.
Method: A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA protocol, derived from the doctoral project at the University of Medical Sciences of Matanzas on the prevention and early diagnosis of colorectal cancer. Articles were included by year of publication, initially scientific articles published between 2011 and 2025, with the initial 5-year range being extended due to insufficient results.
Results: Of the 120 titles identified, 15 original articles were selected. Of these, 40.0% addressed the impact of colonoscopy on the diagnosis and follow-up of colorectal lesions; 33.3% focused on diagnostic indications; 20.0% reported complications, while another 20.0% described the most common colonoscopic findings.
Discussion: Colonoscopy is a safe and valuable tool for the diagnosis and monitoring of colorectal lesions. Among its most frequent findings are polyps, diverticula, hemorrhoids, tumors, and inflammatory lesions. Its essential social value lies in the prevention of colorectal cancer through screening, which requires equitable access to translate its technical capacity into collective benefit.
