Introduction: Mental health care requires the integration of scientific and technological advances with a humanistic approach to nursing care. In this context, the Provincial Teaching Psychiatric Hospital Comandante René Vallejo Ortiz in Camagüey faces the challenge of strengthening values-based training among its nursing staff. The objective of this text is to assess the implementation of a workshop system aimed at strengthening human values in said personnel.
Method: A research and development study was conducted using a mixed-methods approach with a descriptive–evaluative scope and a pre-experimental design (pretest–posttest without a control group), during the period from October 2021 to November 2022. The study population consisted of 205 individuals. A purposive sample of 176 participants was selected, including nurses, psychiatrists, hospitalized patients, and accompanying family members. Theoretical and empirical methods were employed, including scientific observation and surveys, applied before and after the intervention.
Results: The initial assessment revealed deficiencies in postgraduate axiological training among nursing staff. A system of nine workshops based on participatory pedagogy was designed and implemented. Following the intervention, negative evaluations of care were eliminated, and positive assessments increased across all participant groups, demonstrating an improvement in the quality of care.
Discussion: The workshop-based system proved effective in strengthening human values among nursing staff and contributed to the humanization of nursing care for psychiatric patients.
